How to prevent mold and mildew in your bathroom

Mold and mildew can be a real pain to deal with in your bathroom. Not only are they unsightly, but they can also be dangerous if not treated properly. Here are some tips on how to prevent mold and mildew from forming in your bathroom. Also some solutions for removing them if they do occur.

The humidity level is below 50%

You can do this by running a dehumidifier in the room, or by using a fan to circulate the air. You can also make sure that you regularly clean all of the surfaces in the bathroom, and that you dry off any wet surfaces after you shower. It also helps to leave the window open while you shower, and then close it once you are done.

Using Frieze carpets

Frieze rugs have a special anti-fungal treatment, which keeps them from growing mold and mildew. This treatment makes them perfect for bathrooms because they will keep the moisture content down. They will also help to dry off surfaces after people get out of the bath or shower.

Use tiles with high gloss finishes

These tiles also tend to be easy to clean, so there is less of a chance that they will allow mold and mildew to grow. Additionally, the tiles need to be glazed so that they can prevent moisture from seeping into them.

Make sure that your bathroom has good ventilation

The more moist air that can get replaced by dryer air flowing in through vents, the less likely it is that there will be a chance of mold growing on the walls or floors of your shower or bathtub area.

Make sure that you clean all of your towels

Once you dry off after a shower or a bath, make sure you do not leave any wet towels on the floor or hanging up to drip dry. This just creates an optimal environment for mold and mildew growth. If there are no dirty towels left lying around, then there is far less chance of any white spots appearing on bathroom surfaces as time goes on.

Inspect your caulk

In older bathrooms, the caulk around the bathtub or shower can start to grow mold. In these cases, you will want to remove all of the old sealants and then re-caulk using a silicone-based sealant. This will securely lock out moisture from entering behind the tiles in your bathroom.

Inspect your grout lines and seal then if necessary

If you find that your grout lines are harboring a lot of moisture and seem to be growing mold and mildew, you may want to seal them. You can do this by using a sealant specifically for grout, or by using a general-purpose sealant that can be used on both tile and grout. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the sealant carefully, and be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area before you apply it to the entire surface.

How to remove mold and mildew in your bathroom

If you find that you have mold and mildew in your bathroom, there are a few things that you can do to remove it.

Use a commercial mold and mildew cleaner

These cleaners are specifically designed for tile grout lines and tubs where mold and mildew may grow more easily. However, they can also be used on countertops and other bathroom surfaces. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the label carefully to avoid damaging your materials or surfaces.

Make your cleaner

To make your mold and mildew cleaner, mix vinegar and water. Be sure to test the homemade solution on an inconspicuous area before using it on the entire surface.

Baking soda and water

Mix two parts baking soda with one part water into a thick paste. Spread this mixture onto the mold and mildew, let it sit for about 30 minutes, then scrub off any residue with a clean rag dipped in warm water.

Mold and mildew are both unattractive and unpleasant, but they can also be hazardous. Take care of your bathroom to prevent mold from forming or removing it if you find that it has occurred.
